POLITICAL ACTION IN HAYWARD, CASTRO VALLEY, SAN LEANDRO & SAN LORENZO CALIFORNIA

Progressive Politics

The DEMOS Democratic Club exists to persuade voters that there are progressive solutions to today's problems. We work to support those ideas and the progressive politicians who act in our best interests. Through our membership in the California Democratic Council, we network with other Democratic clubs in the state to form a strong "grassroots" bloc within the Democratic Party which lobbies for progressive policies.

An Honored History

The DEMOS Democratic Club was formed in 1967 by a group of citzens from Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Castro Valley to influence local government and politics. The DEMOS Club has almost 200 active members. It was honored in 1986, 1988, and 1999 by the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee as the strongest club in the county. The annual Champions Award of the California Democratic Council is named after one of the club's founders, the late Fran Forsyth.

Community Involvement

The heart of the DEMOS is its grassroots volunteers. However, club members include elected officials such as Rep. Pete Stark, State Senator Liz Figueroa, State Senator Ellen Corbett, Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi, County Supervisor Gail Steele, HARD and Eden Hospital Board members, mayors, city council members and school trustees. Club members serve on local commissions and task forces. Club members sit on various Democratic Party committees. We are active in other groups such as NOW, Gray Panthers, NAACP, GLOBE, and Health Access.

Success & Issues

The DEMOS Club was part of the planned growth coalition that won a majority of the Hayward City Council in 1990. We support rent control, and oppose overdevelopment of Walpert Ridge and the Bay shoreline. We oppose the State Highwas we8 extension. We are active in The South County Peace & Justice Coalition to support affirmative action and immigration justice. We support laws to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. We work for health care, education, libraries, fair taxes and jobs, but to decrease military spending.
